How to use Viagra

Why is viagra not completely specific to erections?

The use of any powerful drug is a trade-off between the hoped-for benefits and the possible adverse side effects. The problem with viagra is that it reduces the amount of phosphodiesterase (PDE) in the body. PDE has different uses in different parts of the body. In total, there are eleven types with PDE5 being the control over erections. PDE3, for example, helps to regulate the dilation and contraction of the heart, while PDE6 is connected with eyesight. Although viagra is reasonably specific to PDE5, some men find other bodily functions are affected, e.g. that their heart rates and blood pressure fall, and their sight acquires a blue tinge or is reduced.

Are warnings necessary?

The main danger comes from taking viagra at the same time as any drug based on nitrates or which is designed to reduce blood pressure. The result of the combination can be a sudden, and sometimes dangerous, drop in blood pressure. Men with heart conditions should also take care not to overexert themselves. Older men, particularly suffering from liver or kidney problems, should seek medical advice before taking viagra.

What are the main side effects?

Viagra should only be taken once every 24 hours and it is not advisable to take one of the other erectile dysfunction drugs at the same time. Drinking more than a token amount of alcohol can also cause problems. For most men there are no side effects. Only a few men do experience problems and, for the majority, they are mild including:

  • a stomach upset;
  • headache;
  • a stuffed-up nose; or
  • back pain.

If you experience any of the following, get medical attention immediately:

  • a painful erection that lasts an unnatural length of time;
  • sudden loss of vision or hearing;
  • swelling in the hands or feet;
  • chest pain;
  • irregular heartbeat; or
  • shortness of breath.
